Track and Cross Country
This year's cross-country team, under the leadership of Coach Ed Zarowin, one
of the best in Tech's history, ended first in the Brooklyn and Flatbush Championships
and placed third in the City.
The year's success can be attributed to a great team effort by all, including
Captain Tomas Gomory, Tyrone Malloy, Mike Fardella, Fred Levine, and Steve Sutton,
the seniors who ran on the varsity squad.
The indoor season also progressed smoothly. Fardella and Malloy, who ran on
the two-mile relay, placed fifth in the Indoor National Championships. The time
they posted was the second best ever in P.S.A.L. history. Indoor Captain Charles
Bernard and Gomory also ran on a medal-winning, two-mile relay in other meets.
Amos Acevedo, Donald Colson and Ronald Strum as members of a novice-mile relay
captured a gold medal at the St. Francis Meet.
Shot-putter George Marmorino placed second in the Novice shotput at the
Cardinal Hayes Meet. At the Novice Championships, Steve Sutton's two-mile relay
runners were the silver medalists. Other outstanding seniors on the team were Fred
Levine, who had placed third in the Novice Championships as a junior; sprinter Alan
Rubin; Jimmy Mark and Gregg Gubitosa, hurdlers.
