Language is a basic characteristic of all men. One thousand years ago the
Vikings were speaking Norse and reciting sagas about their exploits. These
sagas served as models for the youth of the tribe and in effect were instruc–
tions as to what the Vikings stood for. English, itself, in part stems from a con–
glomeration of Norse languages, which we conveniently call Anglo-Saxon.
In Tech, English instruction also plays an important role in education. The
English Department under the direction of Chairman Daniel Cahill realizes this
function and tries to provide a curriculum that will give the student a full back–
ground of literary culture and language skill!.
Instruction is provided in regular and honor classes and in special ad–
vanced placement programs where college credit may be earned.
