The Viking theme of your Yearbook is most appropriate. At
this point in your career, you are undoubtedly experiencing the same
emotions and apprehensions as did the Viking explorer about
to
set sail
into strange, uncharted waters. At the present, you feel secure in your
relatively small and familiar world, knowing that your parents, teachers,
and friends are always at your side. However, ahead of you lies a journey
through life in which there will be hidden reefs, turbulences, and unpre–
dictable challenges.
Though brave, intelligent,
and
imaginative, the Vikings
faced a world which was much less complex than that in which you must
chart your course. You will need all the attributes
of
the Vikings and,
in addition, you will need the ability to adjust quickly
and
effectively
to the demands of an ever -changing society. Reliable prediction of the
demands which will be made upon you is not possible, except to say that
technological advances will continue at an accelerated pace and that each
year new problems of world-wide significance will emerge .
Despite the uncertainty of the future, you are well prepared
for it. You have a firm educational base upon which
to
build. Conceivably,
much of the technology, methods, and theories in vogue today will be obso–
lete within ten to twenty years.
Bo>~ever,
subject matter "per se" is not
the important
thi~.
What will never become obsolete is your knowledge of
how to study, how
to
solve problems, and how to communicate effectively.
These are
fund~ental
skills which you must continue to develop to meet
the more complex challengeH to independent thinking in an adult world .
The future belongs to you.
In
your generation, you will
conquer more things than all mankind in the centuries since the Vikings.
careers.

I wish you every success and satisfaction in your future
Sincerely,
Frank Stewart
