Hoopsters capture third

straight championship

Recoveri ng from a schedul e of tough early season

non-league oppone nts, the baske tball team went on

to win the Iroquois League Championship for an un–

p recedented third straight time.

A string of e leven league wins, highli ghte d by

some thrilling last mi nute victori es, brought the Jack–

e ts the titl e. The junior backcourt combinati on of John

Zagata and Te rry Deery took charge of the ball han–

d li ng chores. John , the team's leading score r, pulled

out an important victory over Ilion with a sixty foot

shot in the last seconds of the game.

Seni ors Ed Syron, Te rry Cook, and Gar ry Scutt

controll ed the boards and got the necessary points

from inside. Chuck Hale played the role of sixth man

and gave the hoopste rs extra rebounding stre ngth

when needed .

A pressure defe nse combined with a fas t break

offense prope ll ed OHS through the second half of

the season. Coach George Matola substituted liber–

all y, giving all the players a chance to test the ir skills.

Although hopes for a Section III title were snuffed

out by a strong opening round opponent, Rome Free

Academy, the team placed two membe rs, John Zagata

and Ed Syron, on the Iroquois League All Star Team

with Te rry Cook and Garry Scutt receiving honorable

mention.
