I like the idea that students can be part of many activities and put so much effort into it. How does your high school compare? It is totally different. We have grades 5-13. We go to school from 8:00 to 1:00. Sometimes we have school on Saturday (we have every third Satur– day free ). At one o'clock we do homework and then go out. We go to cafes or downtown and meet friends . During the weekends we go to discos or bars. What is the legal drinking age? At 16 you can drink beer or anything less than 20% alcohol. We can go into bars. I like it because you can meet so many people and gather and talk and have fun . What is the driving age? You must be 18 to drive. Do you see a problem with the legal drinking age being 16? No, not really. Drinking is accept– ed more in Germany as part of its culture. In America it is forbidden to drink until you are 19. When it is forbidden , more people want to do it. Sure, we have alcohol problems in Ger– many , but it is just different. What is your favorite American food? Cook– iesll What are the most shocking things about America? The power and the missiles the Americans have. Also, the absolute dislike of Russia and everything about it. What is your German family like? I live with my mother, father , and a 14 year old brother. My mom is a librarian and my father is an engineer. Sue Rieck. Dagmar Ulrich What do you want to do when you get back to Germany? Go shopping and catch up with the fashions in Germany. After I finish high school, I would like to go on to the university, maybe to study archeology, but I don't know. I might like to go to the university in Berlin. I like it there. What about AFS? AFS is great ll You can meet people from other countries and cultures. It is good for peace. You learn that all "Turks" aren't bad, for example, so you don 't hate all the people from the countries you didn't know about. You can learn so much! l 5
