They were a chance for students to step outside the normal language boundaries and put their love of language to use. They had the opportunity to learn about culture hands-on and gained a greater appreciation for lan– guage. Students had a chance to come to– gether with people who shared a common interest. Club rivalries formed; however, in the spirit of fun, to express dominant feel– ings of pride for one's language. Clubs some– times came together on weekends to partici– pate in activities like progressive dinners, foreign film festivals, and visiting places of cultural significance. All of these ventures helped make the customs of a particular culture more familiar to students.
