DIRECTION: the line or course on which something is moving or is aimed to move. From the science labs to the gym, from wood shop to World Cultures, and from the art room to E = mc 2 , activities at CHS are always changing - moving in different directions. Some of the directions are good and some are not; still, we move on, adapting and trying new ideas. Coughlin and the people who compose it, continually find themselves facing new and different channels. For the student, the main directions point toward intellectual achievement and social relationships. Academic pursuits help his mind grow and expand, preparing him for future decisions. His attitudes of sportsmanship and competition are guided by his participation in athletic events and group activities. He aims for a unique type of harmony. For the faculty member, opportunities for directions are countless. He promotes and guides the aspirations of the student. helping him to reach his potentials. In addition, the instructor is able to aid the pupil with his academic problems whenever and wherever they arise. Directions, whether they be given or followed, are a necessary ele· ment at Coughlin. Individuals use and combine the courses they follow to develop a viable plan for the future. 2

Elizabeth Payne Miss Elizabeth Payne, a 1926 graduate of Coughlin, has taught Algebra at Coughlin for the past 42 years. Before entering the classroom she wished to help the student understand the importance of algebra, which she feels has been accomplished with great success. Miss Payne, who wouldn't trade her years of teaching for anything, will never forget the friendliness which has been extended to her throughout the years. After many years of fulfillment, her future plans are centered around relaxation. DEDICATION James Payne Mr. James Payne has taught at Coughlin for the past 38 years. He graduated from Coughlin with the class of 1923. As a teacher of Health and Physical Education, his goals were to aid students in their understanding of these subjects and to help them realize their importance, both of which he feels he has accomplished. Memories of which he will be fondest are those of the people, faculty, parties, and programs at Coughlin. Mr. Payne has enjoyed his years teaching and says, "If I didn't like Coughlin, I wouldn't have stayed here this long." 4 Louis Palermo Mr. Louis Palermo was a graduate of Coughlin High School, class of 1925. He has been a teacher at Coughlin for 27 years. Aside from teaching, Mr. Palermo has served as coach and assistant coach of the Coughlin High School Football Team. In 1960, he became athletic administrator for Coughlin, and has remained at that post until the present. Mr. Palermo has said he will miss his athletic involvement at CHS, the teachers, students, and all the friends he has made throughout the years. Mr. Palermo's future plans consist of traveling and relaxation.
Michael Powell Mr. Michael Powell has been a member of the CHS faculty for the last 26 years. Mr. Powell will miss both the student body and the faculty at Coughlin. He has a great interest in the student as an individual. Mr. Powell can be proud of the students who have returned after taking college courses, and have thanked him for laying a good foundation for them. Mr. Powell feels that he is too interested in teaching to give it up completely. He hopes to continue to teach night classes in Americanization. 1912feb<u/IIY 1 I 2 3 4 2345678 6789 10 " 9 10 n 1213 1415 1314 1516 t718 J5f71819202122 202!22232425: ~11'J' 2S26212829 272829 5 Zlata Tuhy Miss Tuhy graduated from Coughlin and of her years working here, she says she enjoyed her work and found students always friendly. At one time she handled the amateur show, directed the Reserve Orchestra, and advised the girl's bowling league. When Miss Tuhy first came to Coughlin, she was faced with an almost impossible task. There was no central library and the health rooms on the third floor were the scenes of disaster with scattered books. Because of her devoted work we have a completely organized and well stocked library. We hope Miss Tuhy will find time to return and visit Coughlin.
