Desire was the keynote of this year's basketball squad. Faced with the pre-season loss of stalwarts Leon Hanna (by an eye injury) an'd Larry Armstead (by transfer to Monticello High), Coach Gilligan did a remarkable job of molding the remainder of the squad into a strong second-place finisher in the DUSO league. After impressively winning their first three games, numbering tough Pough– keepsie among their victims, the team stumbled twice in the lost role of the First Annual Christmas Tournament. After this, the team, bolstered by the return of Hanna, finished strongly, defeating Monticello among others and giving two tremendous efforts which fell just short of beating the eventual league champion Newburgh. The team compiled a 9·3 league record and a 12-6 over-aU mark. Graduating from this year's squad are Captain Mike Burns, Joe Schabot, and John Eccleston. Returning next season will be Dan Heppner, Gary Van Etten, Leon Hanna, John Spinneweber, Rich Van Dyke, Ron Lindsay, Jim Fitzgerald, Brian Bach, and Clint Morello. 121
