The Story Behind a Picture: The Senior Divider A lot of preparation goes into the mak– ing of a single picture. Take, for example, the senior divider picture. It took days just to come up with an idea for the picture. Since the theme of Scarlet '68 is "100 Years– Tradition and Change", the thought of hav– ing kids dressed up in old-fashioned clothes seemed to be both appropriate and novel. When the staff finally agreed on this idea, the real work got under way . Staff members hunted in attics for old clothes, raccoon coats, knickers, straw hats, and fur pieces. They made trips to "thrift shops" and Salvation Army stores in search of needed articles . The editor managed to get Con- C'mon, Mr. Finnegan, try it on! gressman James Hanley's antique car to use in the picture, and the few remaining props they needed, such as shakers, beads, and feathers, were provided by the Cooper Deco– rating Company. The last steps involved the human ele– ment in the making of the picture. The staff made numerous telephone calls trying to find kids who would take an hour out of their summer vacation to pose for the pic– ture . When the final day came, the kids tried on different costumes, mocked each other out, and had an all-around good time. Twenty-three skiddoo! 165
