North High School January 1941 Yearbook (Syracuse, NY) - Full Access
Ethel Giebler. June wanted to ask me about some of the better shops in New Yark for selecting a trousseau. June is leaving her fine position as teacher of Virgil(!) at North to become a June bride. She says the new North High School which has been designed and constructed by Lyman Buck and Frank Neuman was beautifully decorated for the senior dance the other night. The stairway in the new main ballroom was flanked with two potted palm trees which were presented to the school by Robert Klasen, forester. A miniature model of the rocket ship, "Buck Rogers" was the gift of its designer, aeronautical engineer, Tolishus working in collaboration with Frank Zobro. Samples of beautiful photography by James Empringham had been hung in several of the corridors. Along with all the other novel innovations were three new teachers: Lenore Gaebler, dramatics coach and Carmen Pasquarelli and Vincenta Bellomo in the physical education department. I was pretty tired and decided to ride home. Was I surprised when the driver turned out to be Salvatore "Red" Pullano! Syracuse, New York, New Year's Day Last night I went to a New Year's party at "Saw's" home- but then she isn't "Saw" anymore is she? That Christmas when Don Schardt was coming home from a lecture tour and cracked up in the big train wreck, "El" was his nurse. She's been taking care of him ever since. Don, by the way, is the fellow who broadcasts every Sunday night "Good evening Mr. and Mrs. America and all the Rocket Ships on Mars. Let's go to press." I had a wonderful evening! So many of my old friends were there. And so many of them famous people. I danced with Ray Kunzelmann, the Mayor of Syracuse to the haunting strains of Pennisi's Orchestra. My idea of heaven! Bernice Bittner, a featured star at the Met', sang the "Cantique de Noel" and a lively little tune popular these days written by Barbara Micale. She was accompanied at the piano by Peggy Lang. Hannah Foertch, Dean of Women at Syracuse University, was discussing the trend toward more physical education in the schools with the city's new super– visor of physical ed', Pat Vengelist. Radio announcer Jim Kline was l:::road– casting his love to talk by chatting away with our own little chatterbox, Charlotte Donaghue. Rosemary Tinnuzzi, the lab' technician, came with James Preston, her business partner. They have developed a whole new line of cosmetics, the most famous of which is their "Rosemary" Foundation Cream. Some of our prettiest matrons, nee Marcie Birklin, Ann Steingrebe, Rita Zingaro and Harriett Kempf. confess that the secret of their beauty is this preparation. Don Engel. the Atlantic City producer, was there- but alas, minus his bevy of Gorgeous Gals. He does have a way with the women! He told me I was as good a dancer as most of his chorus. Don tells me he is signing up the winner of the first Male Beauty Contes.t in the United States- none other than Robert Ford! Angela Losurdo was reciting some Shakespeare for me. "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." How true that seemed tonight of all nights. How many times I had seen these same people coming off and on the stage of my life. Gosh I'm tired. It must be nearly four and I've got to catch the ten o'clock train to the old grind. Good night!
