Rio de Janeiro Brasilia Rotary Exchange Student to Philippines r----------------- Uarlene Ouklt-r Darlene Oakley has spent this year in Quezon City on Luzon Island, in the Philippines. She stayed with three families this year and has acquired several new brothers and sisters. Darlene learned to savor such delicacies as raw fish, oxtail, and tripe! ! ! Darlene has visited Manila, one of the large Filipino cities. It has narrow streets, filled with horsedrawn ca rriages and many open markets. She has visited Pag– saghan Falls where she rode tl1e rapids, and has seen Taal Volcano. During the Christmas break she visited the rice terraces and the lovely city of Baguio high in the mountains. She is attending the University of the Philippines H. S. Department and is learning Tagalog, the native language. She is also on the yearbook staff at her school. Darlene was fortunate enough to witness a student demonstration at the Philippines. Just think, she only had to travel 1,000 miles to see her first demonstration! Darlene has truly enjoyed this pasl year. She has learned about a new and different way of life and has benefited g reatly from living in this different culture.
