BSU: Black Student Union is an organization which African-American students come together to ex· plore and research their cultural background. Along with unity, this organization highly promotes cul– tural awareness. They get to come together with the other African-American Studies groups around the city at UNM and the Kirkland Air Force Base. They also have special guests. In addition to all the studying that goes on, Black Student Union has entertaining events. Some of the events that took place were a lip sync, a talent show, a dance and frequent smaH parties. It also has a step team, which performs at some assem– blies and other events. The officers ofBSU are President Kiaunta Smith; Donovan Bookout Jesika Bell, LaShawn G., and Kiaunta Smith are having fun Kiaunta Smitth and Tracee Moore Steppin' to the Beat! Vice-president Eric Nelson; Secretary, Victoria Barajos; Treasurer, LaShawn Grefphenreed; and Parliamentarians Greg Beasly and Tracee Moore. The sponsor is Portia Calhoun, who schedules many service events for the group such as Kwaan– za, an African-American holiday that starts in De– cember. She has made sure that the BSU is able to have entertaining events as well projects that will be beneficial to the education of their people and their community.
