Practice and hard work paid off for the girls' tennis team in their almost undefeated season. The girls won or tied all their matches except the final contest of the sea– son against undefeated Mackenzie. This loss was the first in two years. The match with Redford was so close that it lasted three hours. All the girls on both varsity and reserve teams received letters from Coach Nancy Jewett. The practices were held at Rouge Park, many of which were on cold, rainy days. Despite the weather conditions, the team worked hard to develop good tennis form and control of the ball. The fine techniques of the backhand are displayed by Gayle Polk who played first singles in the match against Northwest– ern. Cody went on to win this match. During the matches, the girls practice a tradition of giving the balls to the winners of the indi– vidual matches. This practice en– courages the girls to win and pro– motes good sportsmanship be– tween teams. 114
