Mr. Jay Stielstra, along with Mr. Ed Klum, Mr. Chuck Ritter and Mr. Ben Korgen, did an excellent job of getting the boys in shape and showing them how to play championship football. Along with the coach– ing staff were Co-Captains Roy Campbell and Kelly Rae. Both boys showed excellent leader– ship and good sportsmanship. Roy Campbell was elected the team's most valuable player. By defeating Grosse Pointe 21-13 the Pio– neers proved that once again they would be the team to watch. In a strictly ground game, the Pioneers showed power in the backfield plus a strong defensive line. Ray Pittman, the hard– running senior, carried the ball for two touch– downs while Paul Fuester scored once. Ann Arbor threw only one pass, good for nine yards. Fred Jackson kicked three extra points. 40 second 6-A. • 1n The first home game of the year was against Kalamazoo. A good crowd turned out to watch the Pioneers roll to a 20-6 victory. The first touchdown came on a pass from Lou Winkel– haus to Kelly Rae. Then it was Fuester's turn as he powered his way into the end zone. Pete Brown, playing in place of injured Roy Camp– bell, scored on a good run past the Kalamazoo defense. On September 29th at eight o'clock, Flint Central visited Hallway Field. Roy Campbell was back in the line-up as the Flint team found out in a matter of minutes. Campbell scored twice. Paul Fuester also scored a touchdown on a well executed run. The Pioneers met their first defeat at the hands of Lansing Sexton, 7-6. Ann Arbor's lone touchdown came on a forty-one yard pass from Winkelhous to Rae. The P .AT. attempt was missed. The game was strictly defensive with both teams out for a much wanted win.
