Counselor Retires Mrs. Mary Shirley, who has been at East Ascension since it began, will retire this year . She taught school for 15 years and counseled for the past eight years. Her future plans are to have time to cook and to travel. She will continue, however, to be a Spartan fan. Mrs. Shirley loves the students of East Ascension and says she will miss helping people. Students and faculty will also miss her. Industrial Arts Receives Top Honors East Ascension's Industrial Arts Club has a lot to be proud of. As well as being recognized as the top club in the state for 6 of the last 8 years, including the last 4 years in a row. Last year they were honored as the top club in the nation. This year's state convention brought many awards to the club. Their scrapbook captured first place, while Tracy Owens won the office of state parliamentarian. Mr. C. Backes received the honor of outstanding state sponsor, and the quiz bowl team garnered first place in the state. As well as excelling at convention, the EA Industrial Arts Club kept busy locally, sponsoring a Christmas for LeBlanc Special School students, collecting canned goods for Christmas and Thanksgiving, as well as sponsoring their own school arts and crafts fair. 33
