60 Wrestling Squad Sends Three To State The Plainville Wrestling Squad sent three wrestlers to the State Wrestling Tournament at Beloit. All three wrestlers were only Sophomores. There were no Sen- iors out this year so the leadership had to be provided by two Juniors, Joe Becker and Mike Hargrave . The young grapplers had an im- pressive seven wins, five losses, and one tie , for their team record at the end of the season. With eight of the twelve weights being filled by Freshmen and Sopho- mores, it was plain to see just how inexperienced the squad was. The league was as tough as usual this year and with Norton added among the teams it could be one of the tougher leagues in the state. Overall the boys did a fine job covering up fo the big lack of ex- perience with dedication and hard work. Joel Sumearll, Tim Steinert, and Fred Wise all placed in the top four at the Regional Tourna- ment at Oberlin, thus earning themselves a spot in the State Tourney. Joe Becker also had a fine record and should make it to state next year. Mike Gager, an- other Sophomore , also had a very good season record. Gager along with Steinert were elected as co- captains by coach Jim Stanley. Plainville lost heavily from last year's graduation. This along with the fact that two-year state tour- ney competitor Bob Plante chose not to participate in the wrestling program this year explains partly why the team was so inexperi- enced. What was to be considered by many as a rebuilding year for Plainville, proved to be a sue- cessful season for coach Stanley and his young matmen. So with all the experience and knowledge gained by the underclassmen this year 1 Plainville wrestling should be on the upswing and the next few years should be successful for the grapplers of PHS.
