Boys' Varsity Basketball Season Has Winning The Plainville Basketball squad had a successful season again un- der second year head coach Joe Palmer. With good size but a lack of speed, the Cards had to control the tempo of the game in order to win. Plainville often picked up the pace in the second half to put the game away. At the Mid- Continent League Tournament Plainville got revenge from two earlier season losses against Phillipsburg and Osborne . In the first round, they beat a scrappy Stockton team. Then, in second round action they defeated Phillipsburg in a thriller, by a score of 55 to 53 in overtime . A strong defense and some clutch free throw shooting in the second half helped the Cards come back from a first half deficit . In semi- final action against Osborne, it was a well balanced offensive at- tack along with strong rebounding. In the championship game, Plain- ville was topped by a talented Hill City team that went on to become state champs. In the Regional Tournament at Hill City the young Cards defeated a weak Trego squad to advance to the semifinal game against Wheatland. The Cards led throughout the game until the fi- nal minutes when costly turnovers and poor shooting cost the Cards the game and a trip to the Sub- state tourney. Bruce Slimmer and Mason Jones were chosen as co-captains by coach Palmer. Big Brad Norton along with Jeff Wheatley, did some fine ball playing. The team was picked by many to be in the bottom of the league . Tiris was due to the fact that last year's graduation took four starters from last year's team that went to state. But with hard work and ag- gressive play the Cards were very successful.
