48 Young Cross Country Team Shows The cross-country team did ex- ceptionally well this year under coach Joe Palmer. It was Palmer's first year as cross- country coach here in Plainville. Top harrier for the Cards was Sophomore Craig Hamel. The best time turned this year by Craig was a 10:16. Ha- mel, along with Joel Sumearll, participated in the state cross- country meet at Wamego. A little misfortune prevented the entire team from state competition when Dave Rempe broke his leg just before the Regional meet. If Rempe had run, the team most likely would have qualified for the state meet. The top four runners for Plain- ville were Hamel, Sumearll, Rempe, and Pat Hageman. Pat was also team captain. The lone Senior on the team was Mason Jones. Jones did a fine job for the team all season. Lettermen include the top four runners along with Jones, Neal Dreher, Darrel Brown, Ross Brick, ley, and Brad Norton. The top seven runners of this year's team will be returning next year. Over- all, the squad fared well. This year they brought home a first place finish from the Natoma Inv. A second place finish was taken at the P-burg meet. The second place showing was excellent as there were several 3A teams pre- sent. At Regionals the squad was Improvement sixth. At no point during the sea- son did they place lower than fifth. For next year the outlook is bright. Fourteen underclassmen will return along with three Juniors coming back.
