KNEELING: jim Wendler, Hiidred Spates, Craig Powers, Bill Smith, Gus Vaughn, Jeff Rifken. STANDING: Mike Noonan, Tom Akemann, M ike Wimpelberg, john McGhee~ Mike Good– year, Coach Chesbrough, Coach Entwhistle. Bob Winter tips in another two for the Maroons. With only one returning letterman, it seemed Coach Chesbrough had a big job ahead of him. It took most of the season for Coach Chesbrough to settle on a permanent starting five. However, it seemed that whatever combina– tion he decided upon made an impressive showing. Al– though not winning the Upstate Eight title, the Maroons proved themselves one of the top teams in the new con– ference. In state competition, the Maroons won the re– gional tournament at Crystal Lake by beating Woodstock. The team surprised everyone except themselves and their loyal fans by beating Downers Grove in the first game of the ectional tournament. They ended up in second place, losing a tough game to Glenbard East. The Maroons really pulled together as a team and proved to be a team of which Elgin was proud. 70
