The VISitmg Elgin M aronns took the Larkin Royals in the first varsity contest between the two schools. Game time came. Memorial Field was filled to capacity. The visiting stands were packed ' ith EH students and fans. The Larkin stands were filled too. Their victory bell was proudly di played, waiting to ring out the winning score. It never got a chance. The Elgin Maroons won the game 26- 13. It was a tough game, but the better team carne out on top. Ever since its completion, Larkin has been referred to by EHS students as Larkin Jun ior High because they do not want to consider themselves on the same level. The most excttmg and looked forward to game of the ea on was be ·ond a doubt the Elgin-Larkin game. It will long be remembered by students and adults alike. The rivalry between the two schools began when plans for its con truc– tion got under way. It reached a high for this game. The outcome of the contest had been predicted: Larkin by thirteen points. They thought they would win · we knew we would. everal weeks before the game the Larkin banner mys– teriou ly disappeared. It howed up the week of the game. The culprit were given an ultimatum : Produce the Aag or forfeit the game. Friday after school it was presented to Mr. Alexander during a pep rally in the park. An Elgin player makes an aUempt to stop Larkin's speedy halfback, Tony Stermitz. 18 During the game the fans were standing up and cheering more than they were sitting down.
