principal's message AN OBLIGATION Chico High School will change radically in the not too distant future unless we vitalize our traditions, strive to make these traditions a living part of all who enter our school. California is growing at a tremendous rate. People of all kinds, from all over the United States are thronging westward. A change has come over our state, a change for the worse. One needs only glance at the newspapers, listen to the radio to recognize the downward trend. This population surge will soon come to our community bringing with it all types of social problems including those of Chico High. We have an exceptional student body, students who respect their school, and who are extremely proud and fond of Chico High. Over the years we have developed high standards of school citizenship, of achievement in many fields. You have won the respect of all those with whom you have associated. On your various trips representing Chico High our students have brought honor to Chico and Chico High. This surge of population will bring with it those who would break down our standards, trample on our tradition and ideals, change the complexion of Chico High unless you, the students of Chico High, do all in your power to uphold those traditions, ideals, and standards, and imbue every newcomer to Chico High School so that he will become an ardent sharer in them, and that he will in turn transmit the ideals of this school to those who follow him. You and I have the obligation to "transmit this school, -- not les~, -- but greater, better and more beautiful -- than it was transmitted to us." This is our obligation, our duty, our privilege. Let us not fail! Carl ]. Schreiter

The Caduceus assembly was conducted by Gene Tapie, Master of Ceremonies; and acts by Doug Sundby and Mike Calkins provided a well-rounded program for the student body. In the pictures below, both Doug and Mike are equipped with "geetars". One difference-Doug's "ain't" and Mike's "is". The 1956-57 Caduceus Staff worked with enthusiasm, interest, and displayed their individual abilities in the production of the yearbook. Judy Grossman proved to be a tireless and most competent editor. Keith Calkins, assistant editor, doubled as advisor for the activities section, and is well prepared to assume his duties as editor next year. Not enough credit can be given to Phil Speegle for the layout of the book and his work as art editor. Nancy Nugent did an excellent job in completing the difficult class section of the book. Dee Cady, Mike McPherson and Jim Andruss handled the business affiliations very adequately. The sports sections indicate the effort put forth by Janice McKinney, Bob Dussault, and Mike Daughtery. Cathy Christenson displayed her ability in completing the club section and handled the Mr. and Miss Caduceus contest very satisfactorily. Sharon Bowles, • next years art editor, developed the faculty section.
And the King, who had his couriers assembled before him at nightfall, said unto them, "Bring to me the wisest man in my kingdom so that I may pay homage to him." Having received the orders, the messengers set forth on their quest which was to endure many months. The first days went by swiftly but then turned into long arduous periods of time. On the eleventh month a messenger presented to the King a young student who was accompanied by a tall, educated man in his late years. "Is this he?" asked the King. He was answered in the affirmative. Seeing the man, the ruler asked who he was. And the student answered, "This is my educator." And so to Mr. Carl J. Schreiter this 1956-1957 Caduceus is respectfully dedicated. • d e d • 1 c a t • 1 0 n Mr. Schreiter has spent many long years as the educator of the citizens of tomorrow, and yet, he remains a student of knowledge himself. He has completed an extensive study of German and in 1959, accompanied by Mrs. Schreiter, plans to live in Germany, in the rural areas, in order that he may achieve a life-time goal. Mr. and Mrs. Schreiter have found many hours of pleasure in the High Sierras where they spend most of their vacations. Their home on Vallombrosa was the first stabilized adobe house in Chico and has been the attraction of many visitors to this city. Mr. Schreiter, Past President of the Toast Masters Club, excels in public speaking and has received many awards for his outstanding ability. He is a Past President of the Chico Lion's Luncheon Club, and is also a member of Chico Lodge, F. & A.M. None can doubt that Mr. Schreiter has truly been a friend to all those who have passed through the portals of Chico Senior High.
